William Diehl was an American novelist and photojournalist who began his writing career at age fifty after successful work in photography and journalism.
His debut novel, Sharky's Machine, became a film directed by Burt Reynolds.
Diehl relocated to St. Simons Island, Georgia, where he wrote eight more novels, including Primal Fear, which was also adapted into a successful film starring Richard Gere and Edward Norton.
He later returned to the Atlanta area and resided in Woodstock, Georgia.
Diehl passed away in 2006 at Emory University Hospital due to an aortic aneurysm while working on his tenth novel.
