Iain Banks was a Scottish author known for his mainstream and science fiction novels.
Born in 1954, he studied at the University of Stirling and later lived in London before returning to Scotland.
Banks wrote under two names: Iain Banks for mainstream fiction and Iain M. Banks for science fiction.
He was politically active, supporting Scottish independence and protesting the Iraq War.
Banks was married to Annie for 25 years before separating in 2007.
His works often explored left-wing themes and social issues.
In April 2013, Banks announced he had late-stage cancer and died in June of that year.
His final novel, The Quarry, was published posthumously.
